In Year 1, the modules offer an in-depth exploration of topics essential for students pursuing studies in sustainable development, policy analysis, and governance. The Dissertation (PES7040-E) module encourages the development and demonstration of advanced knowledge and skills through the design and execution of a self-directed research project. This module fosters critical inquiry into relevant subjects while supporting the effective completion of a time-limited project. Critical Perspectives on Sustainable Development (DEV7026-B) offers students an advanced understanding of sustainable development, considering its economic, social, and environmental dimensions. The module examines global and national policy discourses, the measurement of sustainability, and the roles of both state and non-state actors in its implementation, including corporate social responsibility. Policy Analysis for Governance and Development (DEV7037-B) equips students with advanced policy analysis skills and a systematic understanding of institutions, both formal and informal, and their role in governance and development. The module delves into the contested nature of government quality, exploring the changing roles of the state, governance, and its indicators.
