COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1, students studying psychology will gain advanced knowledge across several core areas, including social psychology, research methods, psychobiology, lifespan development, cognitive psychology, and the completion of a dissertation.The Social Psychology module (PSY7011-B) offers a critical understanding of human behavior in social contexts. Students will explore group dynamics, from small networks like friendship to larger societal groups, examining traditional theories and recent challenges like the replication crisis in research. Ethical considerations in social psychological research will also be a key theme.The Research Methods in Psychology module (PSY7004-B) develops an understanding of empirical research methods. Students will learn about the strengths, weaknesses, and appropriate use of various quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis methods. This module provides practical experience in conducting and reporting empirical research.The Psychobiology and Neuroscience module (PSY7012-B) explores the biological foundations of behavior, including the role of the nervous system in processes like emotion, pain, sleep, and neurological disorders such as anxiety, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer's disease. Students will also learn about biological and pharmacological treatments for these conditions.The Lifespan and Individual Differences module (PSY7026-B) focuses on developmental psychology across different life stages, from infancy to later life. Students will engage with the relationship between developmental psychology and other disciplines and explore individual differences in psychological development.The Research Project in Psychology module (PSY7007-B) equips students with skills in designing, implementing, and analyzing data for an empirical research project in psychology.Finally, the Dissertation module (PSY7008-E) allows students to conduct original research and produce a 13,000-word dissertation. This project helps students consolidate their research skills and gain in-depth knowledge in their chosen area of psychology.
