COURSE CURRICULUM
This postgraduate programme in Human Bioarchaeology is designed to provide students with advanced knowledge of human skeletal biology, archaeological science, and the interpretation of past populations through the study of human remains. The course combines theoretical learning, scientific analysis, and practical laboratory experience to prepare graduates for careers in bioarchaeology, forensic anthropology, archaeology, heritage management, and related research fields. Students study Human Bioarchaeology to develop a comprehensive understanding of the biological and cultural information preserved within archaeological human remains, including population health, demography, diet, migration, and burial practices. Musculoskeletal Anatomy provides detailed knowledge of the human skeletal and muscular systems, enabling students to accurately identify anatomical structures and understand their relevance to archaeological and forensic investigations. Palaeopathology explores the identification and interpretation of diseases, trauma, nutritional deficiencies, and other pathological conditions evident in skeletal remains, allowing students to reconstruct the health and lifestyles of past populations. Professional Development enhances essential research, communication, project management, and employability skills while preparing students for professional practice within archaeological, academic, museum, and heritage sectors. A significant component of the programme is the Dissertation, where students undertake an independent research project that applies advanced analytical methods to a specialised topic in bioarchaeology, demonstrating critical thinking, scientific investigation, and academic research skills. Students can further tailor their studies by selecting optional modules such as Chronology, Isotopes and Biomolecules, which introduces scientific techniques including radiocarbon dating, stable isotope analysis, and biomolecular methods used to investigate diet, mobility, ancestry, and chronology in archaeological contexts. Alternatively, Grave Concerns: Investigating the Archaeology of Death and Burial examines burial archaeology, funerary practices, mortuary landscapes, and the cultural significance of death across different societies and historical periods. Throughout the programme, students develop expertise in skeletal analysis, archaeological interpretation, scientific research, ethical practice, and evidence-based investigation. Overall, the course prepares graduates with advanced practical, analytical, and research skills for careers in bioarchaeology, forensic anthropology, archaeological consultancy, museums, cultural heritage organisations, academic research, and doctoral study, while contributing to the scientific understanding of past human populations and their environments.
