COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year, students in forensic science and related fields engage in a wide range of specialized modules that provide theoretical knowledge and practical skills. The Law for Expert Witnesses module (LAW7028-B) introduces students to the English Legal System and the role of the expert witness within that system, providing essential legal context for those pursuing forensic careers. The Professional Development module (ARC7041-B) focuses on the development of key professional skills and an introduction to research or professional brief writing. This module also supports students' independent study and work with a supervisor to tailor their professional and academic progress. The Forensic Archaeology and Crime Scene Investigation module (ARC7012-B) builds upon previous modules, providing advanced skills for applying archaeological principles to simulated crime scenes and training students to present evidence in court. The Forensic Taphonomy module (ARC7017-B) covers the principles and practices of forensic taphonomy, including the degradation of human remains in various environments, both terrestrial and underwater. The Dissertation module (ARC7034-E) offers students an opportunity to conduct substantial independent research, including project design, analysis, and the presentation of findings. The Advanced Fieldwork program for CSI module (ARC7014-C) presents students with a simulated major inquiry into issues like terrorism or organized crime, integrating archaeological and crime scene investigative skills. The Independent Research Papers for CSI module (ARC7040-C) tasks students with writing two critical reviews on current forensic science issues, enhancing their research and analytical skills. Additionally, the Introduction to Forensic Archaeology and Forensic Anthropology (ARC7038-B) and Crime Scene Investigation (ARC7039-B) modules provide students with foundational knowledge and practical experience in recovering and analyzing human remains and processing crime scenes. These modules collectively prepare students for careers in forensic science and law enforcement.
