The Year 1 modules in the Biomedical Science program offer a well-rounded foundation in bioinformatics, molecular biology, and research methodologies. Advanced Bioinformatics (BIS7018-B) focuses on teaching students a principal coding language for bioinformatic analysis, enabling them to autonomously create bioinformatic pipelines to tackle biomedical big data challenges. Practical Molecular Biology (BIS7027-B) allows students to engage in a short, research-driven project combining both wet lab and dry lab elements, offering hands-on experience in experimental techniques and time management. The Research Project (BIS7026-E) fosters independent problem-solving by critically evaluating current research in biomedical science, using appropriate techniques to generate and interpret data, and presenting findings through reports and scientific posters. The 'Omics' Techniques in Biology and Healthcare (BIS7019-B) module develops an understanding of emerging technologies in genomics, proteomics, and metagenomics, and their application in biological research and healthcare, encouraging critical thinking through seminars and literature reviews. Principles of Bioinformatics (BIS7017-B) enhances students' autonomy in utilizing web-based platforms for analyzing and annotating biomedical data. Practical Skills in Research (BIS7028-B) focuses on advanced pharmacology techniques, developing research and communication skills, while Research Project Preparation and Plan (BIS7022-B) equips students with the skills necessary for planning, executing, and disseminating quantitative research projects.
