COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1 of the Archaeological Sciences MSc program, students explore the application of scientific methods in the study of the past, focusing on archaeology, forensic science, and chemistry. The Archaeometry module (ARC7035-B) emphasizes the role of scientific techniques in understanding key areas such as chronology, diet, and identity in ancient societies. Students gain hands-on experience with stable light isotope analysis and other scientific techniques, learning to evaluate archaeological findings and address the challenges of interpretation. The Nature of Matter and Instrumental Analysis module (ARC7045-B) provides a comprehensive understanding of the physical and chemical properties of materials, with an emphasis on microscopic and macroscopic interactions. In the first semester, students explore the relationships between atomic interactions and physical properties, while the second semester delves into instrumental analytical techniques used in archaeological and forensic science. The Professional Development module (ARC7041-B) is designed to help students build essential professional skills specific to their specialism. It includes sessions on research design, professional writing, and presentation, fostering the development of analytical, chemical, and archaeological expertise. The dissertation (ARC7034-E) allows students to conduct original, supervised research, applying all aspects of the research process—from project design to data analysis and final presentation. This experience is an essential part of the program, enabling students to explore their research interests in depth and develop their skills as independent researchers. Together, these modules provide a strong foundation in archaeological science, preparing students for careers in research, analysis, and professional practice in archaeology and related fields.
