COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1 of the MSc in Civil and Structural Engineering, students engage with key modules that build essential skills in advanced geotechnics, structural design, and water treatment. The Advanced Geotechnics module (CSE7009-B) addresses challenges in near-surface soil layers, focusing on soft soils and high groundwater conditions. It teaches students to develop safe, cost-effective, and environmentally sustainable geotechnical solutions, including designing dewatering systems, soil improvement techniques, and temporary ground support. The Advanced Structural Design module (CSE7014-B) provides practical experience in the complete design process, from interpreting a client’s brief to presenting a detailed design solution with engineering drawings and calculations. This module develops students' ability to navigate the complexities of structural design in real-world scenarios. The Water and Wastewater Treatment module (CSE7013-B) introduces students to water pollution, its sources, and the processes of water and wastewater treatment. Students learn how to assess water quality and design systems for both water supply and wastewater treatment. The MSc Project module (ENG7002-E) provides an opportunity to apply knowledge in a substantial project, allowing students to demonstrate their ability to plan, implement, and review professional engineering activities. These modules offer a comprehensive foundation in civil and structural engineering, equipping students with the practical skills and theoretical understanding necessary for successful careers in the field. The combination of advanced technical knowledge, hands-on design experience, and real-world application ensures that students are well-prepared for future challenges in the engineering industry.
