COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1, students engage in advanced modules that deepen their knowledge of natural resource governance, conflict research, and development in fragile and conflict-affected areas.The Natural Resource Governance module (PES7045-B) explores key concepts and challenges surrounding the management of natural resources like land, water, forests, fisheries, and minerals in developing countries, particularly in fragile or conflict-affected regions. Students develop an understanding of governance processes, cooperation, and justice in resource use, alongside policies addressing conflict sensitivity, gender issues, and resilience.The Dissertation module (PES7040-E) offers an opportunity for independent research, where students design and execute a self-directed project related to their field of study. This module encourages critical inquiry, research skills, and effective completion of a time-limited project.The Applied Conflict Research module (PES7036-B) focuses on the methods and approaches in conflict research, teaching students to critically apply conflict theory to understand conflict situations and their impacts. It also emphasizes working in fragile, conflict-affected areas with a focus on conflict sensitivity.The Security and Development in Fragile and Conflict-Affected Areas module (PES7048-B) examines the interrelationships between conflict, security, poverty, and development. Students develop a deeper understanding of theories related to fragile states, resilience, and peace-building, and learn to apply analytical frameworks in conflict and post-conflict contexts. This module also addresses key issues such as gender sensitivity and natural resource governance in fragile regions, preparing students for work in international policy and development sectors.
