COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the program, students explore key issues in international relations, security, and governance through a variety of specialized modules. The International System in Theory and Context module (PES7054-B) provides advanced knowledge of the origins and context of the modern state and contemporary international relations. It delves into key academic perspectives and theories concerning the nature and development of the state system and global order, allowing students to critically apply these perspectives to specific trends and issues in international relations. The module also explores the significance of identity and gender in shaping international relations. The Environment, Trafficking, and Crime: Transnational Issues and International Governance module (PES7062-B) offers an advanced examination of transnational problems such as environmental challenges, trafficking, and international crime. It looks at the causes and dynamics of these issues and the international responses aimed at addressing them. Students gain experience with key concepts and analytical frameworks related to the securitization and de-securitization of these problems, studying how international governance and policies are shaped to address these global challenges. The Dissertation module (PES7040-E) is an opportunity for students to engage in independent research on a topic relevant to their studies. It allows them to demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills by completing a major self-directed dissertation, promoting critical inquiry and effective project execution in a supportive environment. The Contemporary Security Challenges module (PES7037-B) focuses on the key concepts, theories, and analytical frameworks of security studies. It provides an in-depth understanding of contemporary security challenges, particularly those that are transnational or international in nature. The module examines major issues such as risks of violent conflict, military confrontations, and challenges to global and regional security governance, with case studies focusing on key areas like Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. Students engage with policy debates and gain skills in analyzing the factors contributing to conflict and assessing the risks of interstate and transnational conflicts.
