COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of this program, students engage in core modules designed to deepen their understanding of development theory and practice while equipping them with essential research and analytical skills. The Dissertation module (PES7040-E) allows students to demonstrate their ability to conduct independent research by designing and executing a major self-directed project. This module fosters critical inquiry, providing a supportive environment for students to explore relevant topics in depth and complete a time-limited project.The module Assessing Development Practices Needs and Outcomes (DEV7039-B) helps students gain advanced knowledge about the evaluation of development practices. It covers the use of methods for assessing needs, monitoring progress, and evaluating the effectiveness of development policies and programs. Students will also develop a critical understanding of the use of indicators and metrics, and learn to critique contemporary debates on their application and limitations.The Issues in Development Theory module (DEV7003-B) provides a cross-disciplinary framework to study development theories critically. This module explores the evolution of development ideas and offers an integrated approach to understanding the diverse paradigms that have shaped contemporary development thinking.Finally, Policy Analysis for Governance and Development (DEV7037-B) focuses on the development of advanced policy analysis skills. Students will study the dynamics between formal and informal institutions, the evolving concept of governance, and quality of government. The module emphasizes applying these skills to key policy areas such as justice, equality, governance improvement, and achieving development goals, helping students understand the complexities of governance and public policy in development contexts.
