In the first year of the LLM program, students engage in foundational modules that lay the groundwork for their specialized legal studies. The Foundations of Law and Skills (DL) module (LAW6029-Z) introduces students to the English and international legal systems, including key academic skills like research, critical thinking, and analysis. This module is particularly valuable for those from non-common law backgrounds and is compulsory for all LLM students. It emphasizes the importance of understanding both substantive and procedural law, providing students with essential legal principles and the ability to apply them in various contexts.The Sustainable Development Law in Contemporary Business and Society module (LAW7030-B) offers insight into international law related to sustainable development. It covers critical areas such as business, the environment, human rights, and international trade. This module is particularly relevant for LLM students specializing in fields like technology and artificial intelligence law, international corporate law, and environmental law. It examines the role of sustainability in addressing global challenges, such as poverty, inequality, and climate change, making it crucial for students in a variety of legal specializations.In Regulatory Theory and Practice (LAW7035-B), students explore different regulatory theories within a legal context, examining key questions around the necessity, approaches, and structure of regulation. This module provides a theoretical foundation for understanding the legal challenges of regulation and the frameworks used to resolve disputes.The Dissertation module (LAW7032-E) allows students to conduct independent, advanced research on a legal topic within their specialization. This module encourages students to develop theoretical and policy arguments, advancing their capacity for critical thinking and independent study while acquiring transferable skills in written and oral communication.
