In the first year of the LLM program, students engage in a range of core modules that build a strong foundation in legal theory, practice, and specific areas of law.The Foundations of Law and Skills (DL) module (LAW6029-Z) is designed to introduce students to both the English and International Legal Systems, offering essential knowledge about legal sources and institutions. This module equips students with key academic skills, including research, critical thinking, and analysis, which are vital for success in advanced legal study. It encourages independent and reflective learning and is compulsory for all LLM students.The Sustainable Development Law in Contemporary Business and Society module (LAW7030-B) focuses on international law related to sustainable development, addressing practical issues such as poverty eradication, inequality, and environmental challenges. It covers the significant role of business, human rights, and international trade in sustainable development. This module is integral to various LLM specializations, including Technology and AI Law, Corporate Law, and Environmental Law, and provides a cross-cutting perspective on how law can support sustainable development globally.The Regulatory Theory and Practice module (LAW7035-B) offers a theoretical foundation for understanding different regulatory frameworks within the legal context. Students explore questions such as the necessity of regulation, the approach to adopt, and the composition of regulatory architecture. The module critically examines various regulatory approaches, including risk-based regulation and public interest-based regulation, enabling students to understand the legal challenges and implications of regulatory practices.Lastly, the Dissertation module (LAW7032-E) provides students with the opportunity to conduct independent research in their chosen area of LLM specialization. It enables them to advance theoretical arguments, propose policy reforms, and develop transferable skills in independent study, communication, and problem-solving. The dissertation also encourages personal reflection on the implications of the research process for both professional and personal development.
