COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1 of the LLM program, students engage with a variety of modules designed to develop both foundational knowledge and advanced skills in law. The Foundations of Law and Skills (LAW6029-Z) module serves as an essential introduction for all students, particularly those without prior law background or from non-common law jurisdictions. It covers the English and International Legal Systems, key academic skills, and prepares students for advanced legal research, critical thinking, and analysis. This module is mandatory for all students wishing to pursue an LLM degree.The Sustainable Development Law in Contemporary Business and Society (LAW7030-B) module provides students with a deep understanding of international sustainable development law, focusing on legal frameworks and institutions related to sustainability. It examines critical issues such as poverty, inequality, human rights, and international trade, linking them to modern business and technology contexts. This module is particularly relevant to students in the LLM Technology and Artificial Intelligence Law, International Corporate Law and Governance, International Banking and Financial Technology Law, and other related LLM programs.The Regulatory Theory and Practice (LAW7035-B) module explores the various theoretical frameworks underpinning legal regulation, questioning the necessity of regulation, its approach, and its architecture. Key themes in the module include risk-based, public interest, and responsive regulation. Students will gain an in-depth understanding of regulatory approaches and their real-world legal challenges.Finally, the Dissertation (LAW7032-E) module gives students the opportunity to undertake independent and advanced research in their area of specialization, advancing theoretical and policy arguments. It fosters skills such as independent study, effective communication, and problem-solving, and encourages students to reflect on their personal development and professional practice. This module culminates in a substantial research paper that demonstrates the student’s ability to apply learned principles to a specific legal topic.
