COURSE CURRICULUM

The Game Animation and Development program provides a comprehensive curriculum that spans foundational skills in Year 1 to advanced projects in the final year. Year 1 begins with modules like Introduction to 3D Computer Animation (GAV4007-B), where students learn the full process of creating computer graphics animation, including modelling, texturing, rigging, animation, and rendering. Introduction to Computer Programming for Games (GAV4005-B) introduces students to programming fundamentals, which are critical in game development. Creative Studio Production (FAM4020-B) helps develop creative strategies for media production, while Play, Theory Practice (GAV4014-B) provides students with the theoretical understanding of why people play and how it manifests in games. History and Conventions of Computer Games (GAV4002-B) offers an overview of the evolution of computer games and the techniques used in game design. Additionally, 3D Character Modelling and Animation (GAV4003-B) focuses on practical character animation in a 3D environment.In Year 2, students dive deeper into the gaming industry with modules such as Game Appreciation and Industry Analysis (GAV5010-B), which helps students critically assess core aspects of game development and their own potential career paths. Script Programming and Technical Animation (GAV5001-B) teaches 3D embedded scripting languages and technical animation, while Game Design, Programming and Development (GAV5002-B) focuses on game construction, programming, and applying design principles. Advanced Game Technology and Development (GAV5025-B) introduces students to advanced game technologies, real-time animation, and indie game design, while Storytelling, Narrative and Experience (FAM5019-B) provides an understanding of how to create compelling user experiences across multiple platforms.The third year offers a study abroad or placement year, allowing students to gain practical industry experience. In the final year, students engage in substantial projects with the Individual Project (GAV6017-E), which allows them to showcase their advanced skills in an independent piece of work suitable for a final showreel. The Group Project (GAV6015-D) provides an opportunity to plan, produce, and publicize a group project that integrates learning from other modules, serving as a platform to consolidate specialist skills in a collaborative environment and create a product for the final showreel.
