COURSE CURRICULUM

This Forensic Science programme provides students with a comprehensive understanding of forensic investigation, crime scene analysis, biological sciences, and archaeological techniques through a combination of scientific theory, practical training, and optional professional experiences. During the first year, students develop essential academic and investigative skills by completing Independent Study for Forensic Scientists, which strengthens research, critical thinking, and scientific communication. Principles of Forensic and Crime Scene Investigation introduces the procedures, methods, and legal considerations involved in examining crime scenes and collecting evidence. Introduction to Archaeological Methods familiarises students with excavation techniques and archaeological practices that support forensic investigations, while Biological Anthropology: From Human Evolution to Forensic Anthropology explores human evolution, skeletal biology, and their applications in forensic identification. Scientific Frameworks provides a broad understanding of scientific principles and methodologies, and Field Recording Skills equips students with practical techniques for accurately documenting evidence and field observations. In the second year, the programme focuses on advanced forensic analysis and laboratory techniques. Forensic Examination and Analysis of Physical Evidence develops expertise in identifying, collecting, and interpreting physical evidence, while Statistics and Databases for Forensic Scientists teaches students how to analyse forensic data using statistical methods and digital information systems. Virtual Anatomy for Forensic Sciences uses digital technologies to study human anatomy and forensic applications, while Forensic Chemistry examines chemical analysis techniques used in criminal investigations. Comparative Osteology develops knowledge of skeletal anatomy for identifying human remains and supporting forensic casework. Students may also choose the optional Forensic Biology module to gain additional expertise in biological evidence, DNA analysis, and laboratory procedures commonly used in forensic investigations. In the third year, students have the opportunity to enhance their academic and professional development through an optional industry Placement, gaining valuable real-world experience in a forensic or related professional setting, or participate in a Study Abroad Experience to broaden their international perspective and academic knowledge. Overall, the programme prepares graduates with strong scientific, analytical, investigative, and practical skills for careers in forensic science, crime scene investigation, laboratory analysis, archaeology, law enforcement, and related scientific fields.
