COURSE CURRICULUM
In the first year of the Biomedical Science program, students gain foundational knowledge crucial to understanding human biology and disease. The Genetics module (BIS4019-B) explores core principles of inheritance, molecular and clinical genetics, and red cell antigens, which support careers in research or clinical testing. Cell Biology (BIS4016-B) focuses on the cellular basis of life, covering cell structure, function, and specialised cell types, providing a foundation for those interested in research or disease study. The Molecules of Life module (BIS4017-B) delves into the chemical principles of biological systems, metabolism, and molecular interactions, with an emphasis on their importance in physiological responses, aiding students pursuing careers in medicine and medical research. Laboratory and Professional Skills 1 (BIS4018-B) ensures students develop practical, literacy, and data handling skills, along with a professional understanding of Biomedical Science, preparing them for careers in research or laboratory environments. The Human Physiology module (BIS4009-B) explores the functional organisation of the human body and the effects of disease, helping students understand disease impact on various systems, essential for careers in medicine and medical research. Finally, Introductory Microbiology (BIS4013-B) covers microbial structure, growth, and adaptation, with an emphasis on health impacts and aseptic techniques, preparing students for careers in medical or industrial microbiology. In the second year of the Biomedical Science program, students deepen their knowledge in core biomedical science disciplines. The Clinical and Analytical Biochemistry module (BIS5013-B) covers the biochemical techniques used in screening, diagnosing, and treating diseases, focusing on the biochemical analysis of human samples. Medical Microbiology and Infection Science (BIS5018-B) explores the role of microorganisms in health and disease, including pathogenic microorganisms, host/microbe interactions, and emerging infections. Immunology, Haematology, and Transfusion Science (BIS5012-B) provides an understanding of the immune system and blood-related disciplines, including blood group identification and immune response. Laboratory and Professional Skills 2 (BIS5019-B) enhances practical and professional skills, focusing on employability and personal development, with a particular emphasis on laboratory-based skills and data handling. Pathology (BIS5015-B) focuses on the study of disease mechanisms at the cellular and tissue levels, including digital pathology and its role in cancer diagnosis. Finally, the Molecular Biology module (BIS5020-B) explores the molecular techniques used to study human genetics, genetic sequencing, and personalized medicine, with a focus on recombinant DNA technology and ethical issues in genetic manipulation. In the third year, the School of Chemistry and Biosciences Placement Experience module (BIS5021-Z) allows students to gain valuable workplace experience in a relevant field. The module enables students to apply their academic knowledge in a practical environment, helping them acquire hands-on experience with real-world tasks. It focuses on developing a wide range of skills, including technical problem-solving, time management, communication, and management abilities. This experience is designed to prepare students for careers related to their course of study, providing them with a deeper understanding of professional practices in the field of biomedical science and biosciences. The Biomedical Science Research Project (BIS6026-D) is an individual program of supervised research where students, in consultation with their supervisor, design and conduct experiments, analyze data, present findings, and critically evaluate results and published literature. This project allows students to work autonomously on a unique research project, developing skills in research design, scientific writing, and hypothesis-based research. It supports students’ transition into laboratory-based employment, including positions in the NHS, public health laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology firms, and forensic science, and prepares them for further education programs. Additionally, the Clinical Genetics and Genomic Medicine module (BIS6012-B) builds on students' understanding of the mechanisms involved in disease development, progression, and complications, focusing on the biochemical, cell biological, and physiological changes in the human body. The module also addresses the laboratory diagnosis and management of human diseases, while offering opportunities to further develop discipline-specific and transferable skills in line with HCPC standards.
