COURSE CURRICULUM
In the first year, students study a variety of modules designed to build a strong foundation in engineering principles. The Computer Aided Engineering module (ENB4002-B) provides students with a working understanding of computer-aided design, analysis, and simulation techniques, utilizing industry-standard software. The Design, Build, and Test (Civil and Structural) module (CSE4003-B) focuses on developing problem-solving skills through applied project work, team working, time management, communication skills, and introduces experimental techniques in engineering, emphasizing professionalism, ethics, and sustainability. The Electronics and Mechanics module (ELE4013-B) helps students develop an understanding of basic electrical and electronic circuits, mechanical energy dynamics, and the laws governing their behavior, while consolidating theoretical knowledge through lab work. The Mathematical Methods and Applications module (ENM4004-B) provides a comprehensive foundation in mathematics, enabling students to model and evaluate science and engineering systems and apply new mathematical techniques to solve problems. The Engineering Materials module (ENG4007-B) introduces materials selection, structure, processing, and properties, and applies concepts such as stress, strain, and deformation to engineering frames and structures. Finally, the Thermofluids 1 module (ENG4008-B) offers fundamental understanding in Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics, key components in the study of energy transformation and fluid behavior, with wide applications across various engineering disciplines. In the second year, students in Civil and Structural Engineering focus on both theoretical understanding and practical applications in key areas. The Water Engineering module (CSE5013-B) examines fluid and water-related issues in the context of sustainability and societal relevance, focusing on hydraulic principles and solving engineering problems involving free surface flows. The Structural Mechanics and Analysis module (CSE5011-B) lays the foundation for structural design by exploring stress and strain states, as well as analyzing forces and bending moments in statically determinate structures. The Structural Design Project (CSE5014-B) gives students the opportunity to develop a sustainable design solution while considering aesthetics, safety, and industry practices, with an emphasis on climate action and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Design of Steel and Concrete Structures module (CSE5012-B) equips students with the knowledge and skills to design steel and concrete structural elements using Eurocodes and first principles. The Engineering Mathematics and Machine Learning module (ENM5007-B) introduces students to both deterministic and statistical methods, including machine learning, as tools to solve complex engineering problems. Finally, the Soil Mechanics module (CSE5009-B) focuses on understanding soil behavior and mechanical properties related to strength, compressibility, and permeability, which are essential for safe structural design in various civil engineering projects. In the third year, students in Civil and Structural Engineering deepen their understanding and skills with a focus on advanced design and practical applications. The Advanced Steel and Concrete Design module (CSE6011-B) introduces students to advanced principles of steel and concrete structure design, enhancing their creativity and preparing them for structural engineering roles. The Geotechnical and Civil Engineering Design module (CSE6009-B) builds on the knowledge from Soil Mechanics, emphasizing foundation design, earth-retaining structures, and the use of Eurocode 7. Students develop ground models and geotechnical risk registers, learning to design efficient solutions with the aid of specialist software and codes of practice. The Feasibility Study module (CSE6003-B) challenges students to critically appraise civil engineering problems, encouraging creative solutions and further developing their teamwork and presentation skills. The Sustainability in the Built Environment module (CSE6010-B) addresses the environmental impact of the built environment, equipping students with knowledge on sustainable development principles, including energy consumption, waste generation, and social issues such as gender disparity and modern slavery in the industry. Finally, the Individual Research Project (CSE6012-B) allows students to undertake a research-driven project, applying engineering tools and methodologies, while considering ethical, health, safety, and sustainability challenges.
