COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year, the Design, Build and Test (Chemical) module (CPE4001-B) develops problem-solving skills through applied project work, team collaboration, time management, and communication while introducing experimental techniques and elements of chemical engineering design, with a focus on professionalism, ethics, and sustainability. The Electronics and Mechanics module (ELE4013-B) provides an understanding of electrical and electronic circuits, mechanical energy dynamics, and engineering mechanics for dynamical systems, consolidated through lab work. The Mathematical Methods and Applications module (ENM4004-B) lays a comprehensive foundation in mathematics, reinforcing previous knowledge while introducing new techniques applicable to science and engineering systems. The Engineering Materials module (ENG4007-B) covers material selection, structure, processing, and properties, applying concepts like stress, strain, equilibrium, and deformation to engineering frames and structures. Thermofluids 1 (ENG4008-B) provides fundamental knowledge in thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, focusing on energy transformation, heat transfer, and fluid behavior in various engineering systems. The Computer Aided Engineering module (ENB4002-B) offers an understanding of computer-aided design, analysis, and simulation techniques in Chemical, Civil, Mechanical, and Biomedical Engineering using industry-standard software, providing the foundation for future studies in these engineering disciplines. In the second year, the Chemistry for Engineers module (CHE5001-B) introduces models describing bond formation between atoms, relating these to the physical properties of simple molecules, while providing laboratory experience through organic separations and the characterization of organic chemicals. Students will design synthetic chemistry experiments using greener, sustainable approaches and test results with modern analytical equipment. The Engineering and Chemical Thermodynamics module (CPE5009-B) applies thermodynamics to the analysis of processes and heat transfer, focusing on the interrelation of heat, work, chemical reactions, and physical changes within chemical engineering processes. The Engineering Mathematics and Machine Learning module (ENM5007-B) builds an understanding of both analytical (deterministic) and statistical/machine learning methods as tools to solve multivariate engineering problems. The Mass Transfer Operations module (CPE5004-B) covers the basics of chemical engineering separation processes and mass transfer, focusing on the design and operation of unit operations like distillation, gas-liquid absorption, and crystallization. Reaction Engineering (CPE5005-B) teaches the methodology of linking chemical kinetics with material and energy conservation in the design of chemical reactors, including both homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions under various conditions. The Transport Processes module (CPE5008-B) introduces heat transfer, fluid flow, and particle mechanics, emphasizing their applications in the process industries, with a focus on designing and analyzing heat exchangers, fluid flow systems, and equipment handling fluid-particle systems. In the third year, students have the option to either study abroad or take a placement year. In the final year, the Chemical Engineering Design Project module (CPE6007-D) is designed based on the CDIO concept and requires students to demonstrate their ability to work in a project engineering team, carrying out a substantial chemical engineering process design from the preliminary stage to detailed design. Students will need to consider financial, environmental, and technical aspects related to a major design project while applying skills learned from previous modules. The Process Design module (CPE6005-B) introduces students to the principles of process design, emphasizing the chemistry involved and the constraints of chemical, technical, environmental, safety, and economic factors. The Process Dynamics and Control module (CPE6009-B) provides solid theoretical fundamentals for understanding automatic control in production plants, focusing on dynamic modeling, control stability, various control systems, and the application of machine learning in controller design. The Reliability and Safety Engineering module (ENB6009-B) helps students develop in-depth knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices of reliability and safety engineering, with a focus on applying these principles in the design, operation, and maintenance of complex systems.
