COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the Archaeology program, students gain foundational knowledge and practical skills in archaeological methods, biological anthropology, British archaeology, and heritage studies. The *Introduction to Archaeological Methods* (ARC4018-B) module provides a hands-on approach to the essential principles of archaeological practice, focusing on site identification, excavation, and interpretation. *Biological Anthropology: From Human Evolution to Forensic Anthropology* (ARC4021-B) introduces students to human evolution and the analysis of skeletal remains for archaeological and forensic contexts. The *British Archaeology and Heritage* (ARC4025-B) module explores the archaeology and heritage of the British Isles, helping students develop skills in written and oral communication, data handling, and research. *Scientific Frameworks* (ARC4013-B) offers an introduction to scientific techniques applied within archaeology and forensic anthropology, while *Field Recording Skills* (ARC4022-B) focuses on the critical skills of evidence identification, field data collection, and effective presentation. Finally, *Themes in World Archaeology & Heritage* (ARC4024-B) gives students a global perspective on contemporary and historical themes in archaeological and heritage studies.In the second year of the Archaeology program, students focus on more specialized topics such as heritage management, archaeological practice, and archaeological theory. The *Heritage Management with GIS* (ARC5016-B) module provides an overview of current policies and legal requirements in managing cultural heritage within the UK, alongside practical skills in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to support cultural heritage management. *Archaeological Practice* (ARC5035-B) offers students direct field experience in a range of archaeological, heritage, and forensic techniques, equivalent to 20 credits of laboratory/practical experience, allowing them to apply their learning in real-world contexts. The *Interpreting The Past* (ARC5025-B) module helps students understand key developments in archaeological theory and its importance in research design, method, and knowledge construction, as well as the role of archaeology in contemporary society and its socio-political impact.Third Year Study abroad or placement year.
