COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the Animation program, students engage with foundational modules to develop essential skills in animation production. *Drawing for Production* (GAV4012-B) introduces observational and constructional drawing, helping students identify appropriate uses of formal elements and 2D/3D methodologies. *3D Character Modelling and Animation* (GAV4003-B) provides practical knowledge of 3D animation production processes, specifically focusing on character animation. In *Conventions of Animation* (GAV4001-B), students explore the animation principles to build a solid grounding in animation mechanics, enhancing their research, observation, and technical skills. *Story and Scriptwriting* (FAM4018-B) focuses on script development, teaching students to craft compelling stories and write a 10-minute short film script. *Creative Studio Production* (FAM4020-B) helps students develop creative strategies for producing digital media, fostering an understanding of studio workflows and creative expression. *Introduction to 3D Computer Animation* (GAV4007-B) gives a comprehensive introduction to the entire animation production process, from modelling and texturing to rigging, animation, and rendering. These modules provide the essential skills and knowledge for a career in animation production. In the second year of the Animation program, students build on their foundational skills and engage in more advanced, specialized topics. *Advanced Character Animation* (GAV5007-B) deepens students' understanding of character creation, focusing on both keyframed animation and motion-capture technology to develop effective characters that engage viewers. *Classical Animation* (GAV5021-B) emphasizes traditional animation techniques like cell and stop-motion animation, helping students broaden their creative toolkit and storytelling abilities. *Advanced Drawing for Production* (GAV5020-B) offers students the chance to refine their observational and constructional drawing skills, applying formal elements and 2D/3D methodologies while critically evaluating their own work and that of their peers. *Facial Modelling/Animation* (GAV5005-B) equips students with the skills to create and animate facial expressions and dialogue, preparing them for industry-level briefs and developing their skills in modelling, texturing, rigging, and animation for facial animation. Lastly, *3D Character Creation* (GAV5012-B) introduces students to digital sculpting, focusing on creating ultra-high detail 3D character models used in animation and visual effects, using industry-standard software. These modules prepare students for more advanced animation production and industry-specific practices.Third Year Study abroad or placement year.In the final year of the Animation program, students focus on showcasing their advanced skills through independent and collaborative projects. The *Individual Project* (GAV6017-E) is designed to help students produce a substantial, independent piece of work, supported by a supervisor, that demonstrates their expertise and is suitable for inclusion in a final showreel. The *Group Project* (GAV6015-D) encourages students to plan, produce, and publicize a self-contained group project, integrating material from other modules. This project allows students to consolidate their specialist skills, collaborate within a production team, and effectively use advanced production technologies, resulting in a final product that can also be included in their showreel. These projects offer students the opportunity to demonstrate their readiness for industry roles and apply their knowledge in real-world production environments.
