COURSE CURRICULUM

The Social Work program is designed to provide students with the essential skills and knowledge to work with children, young people, and families across various settings. In Year 1, students develop foundational academic, personal, and professional skills through the Academic, Personal and Professional Development module, supporting their transition to higher education. The program also introduces core concepts, such as communication skills in Engaging and Communicating with Children, Young People, and Families, and understanding child development and transitions in Transition and Development in Children and Young People. Attachment Theory in Practice deepens knowledge of attachment theory, while Ideology, Politics, and Social Policy examines the impact of social policies on care agencies and service users. The Values and Ethics module helps students explore inequality, discrimination, and their professional responsibilities in social care.In Year 2, students further develop their practical skills with modules such as Direct Work with Children and Effective Interventions with Families, which focus on applying theoretical principles in real-world settings. Research in Practice helps students understand research design and develop research-minded practices. Children and Interagency Work highlights the importance of collaboration across professional boundaries, while Working with Children in Educational Contexts explores how additional support in schools impacts children's learning and development.In the Final Year, students consolidate their learning through the Final Year Project, focusing on a topic related to working with children, young people, and families. Modules such as Childcare Law provide critical insights into the legal framework of childcare, while Children, Disability, and Inclusive Practice offers a comprehensive understanding of disability models and anti-oppressive practices. Mental Distress, Recovery, Resilience, and Wellbeing explores contemporary issues in mental health and how they affect different populations, equipping students to promote recovery, wellbeing, and resilience across diverse social contexts.
