This Sociology program provides a comprehensive understanding of social issues, social change, and the application of social theory to real-world problems. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational concepts, starting with "Social Policy and Social Change," which explores the origins of contemporary social issues and how these have evolved over time, particularly in terms of ethnicity, gender, and social class. "Selfhood, Identity and Society" examines the relationship between individuals, groups, and social institutions, focusing on how identity is shaped and experienced in society. The "Critical Study Skills" module builds academic competencies, helping students develop essential skills for successful undergraduate study. "Key Themes and Thinkers in Sociology" connects the evolution of philosophical and sociological thought with contemporary social problems, while "Norms, Deviance and Culture" explores the social and cultural origins of norms and the role of institutions in defining deviance. "Decolonising Social Life" introduces critical social theories and their application to social research and practice, encouraging a reflexive understanding of social issues.In the second year, modules such as "Social Inequalities: Advanced Themes in Sociology" delve deeper into contemporary social theory, analyzing the dynamics of inequality and social change in both local and global contexts. "Social Research Methods in Context" introduces qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, while "Understanding Race and Ethnicity" explores the historical and social construction of race and its ongoing impact. "Gender and Sexuality: Concepts and Applications" critically examines gender and sexual identity within societal contexts. "Proposals for Research and Employability" equips students with skills to develop a dissertation proposal and prepares them for employment.In the final year, students focus on an independent dissertation project where they research a specific social or criminological issue, offering an opportunity to explore a Bradford-based social issue or a broader theoretical problem. The "Health in Society: Community Care Perspectives" module provides a sociological framework for understanding health and illness, while the "Work Placement" module offers students practical experience in the field, preparing them for the workforce. The "Educational Transitions" module critically analyzes educational systems and their impact on social mobility, especially in the context of technological and societal shifts. This program ensures that students are equipped with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills to address social challenges in diverse contexts.
