COURSE CURRICULUM

The Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages MSc at the University of Northampton is structured around a series of carefully designed modules that equip students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required for effective English language teaching. The program begins with Approaches to Language Learning – Theory and Method, which introduces students to key concepts in language acquisition, pedagogical theories, and teaching methodologies, providing a solid foundation for understanding how English is learned. English Language Teaching in Practice allows students to apply this knowledge in practical teaching contexts, developing classroom strategies, lesson planning, and instructional techniques tailored to diverse learner needs. The module on Classroom Language Assessment and Test Construction focuses on the creation, implementation, and evaluation of effective assessments to monitor learner progress and support achievement. Materials Development and Course Design provides students with the skills to design engaging and relevant learning resources and structured courses, integrating linguistic theory with practical application to enhance teaching effectiveness. The program culminates in a Research Thesis, enabling students to conduct independent, original research in TESOL, critically engaging with current issues, methodologies, and evidence-based practices.
