COURSE CURRICULUM

The Psychology with Counselling BA at the University of Northampton is a three-year program designed to provide a thorough grounding in both psychology and counselling theory and practice. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through modules such as psychology in practice, introduction to psychology, becoming a psychologist, positive psychology, psychology for life, and introduction to counselling. This stage emphasizes understanding key psychological concepts, research approaches, and different counselling settings, while developing essential presentation and interpersonal skills. In the second year, the focus shifts to the main theoretical models in counselling, including person-centred, cognitive-behavioral, and psychodynamic approaches, with opportunities to develop practical counselling skills through group work and peer practice. Students also study research methods and statistics, biological and cognitive psychology, development and society, and personality, alongside an optional module on psychology of wellbeing or a work-based placement in educational settings. The third year centers on advanced counselling psychology theory and skills, allowing students to engage with a range of therapeutic issues and apply their knowledge in practical contexts. Students also undertake an empirical dissertation under faculty guidance, focusing on a topic of their choice and applying the research skills acquired throughout the course. The program combines theoretical learning, practical application, and independent research, preparing graduates for careers in counselling, clinical psychology, and related therapeutic professions.
