COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Psychological Science of Sport and Exercise at the University of Northampton is structured over three years to provide a progressive and comprehensive learning experience. In the first year, students are introduced to the role of a psychologist and gain foundational knowledge in sport and exercise psychology, including key behavioral theories and factors influencing motivation and performance. This stage also focuses on developing the academic skills necessary for success at university. In the second year, the curriculum builds on this foundation by integrating biological and cognitive psychology, while examining the impact of exercise and sport on mental health and wellbeing. Students begin to develop research skills and are encouraged to think critically, preparing them to select an independent research topic for their dissertation. The focus is on applying theoretical knowledge to practical contexts while strengthening analytical and investigative abilities. In the third and final year, students complete their dissertation projects, applying research methods to explore topics of personal and professional interest. Additional sport and exercise-related modules further enhance students’ ability to translate their learning into real-world settings, preparing them for careers in sport and exercise psychology, coaching, health promotion, or further postgraduate study. Throughout the program, students develop both theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for professional practice in the field.
