COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Pharmacology degree at the University of Northampton is structured to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of how drugs interact with the body at molecular, cellular, and systemic levels. In Year 1, students build a solid scientific foundation through modules in biochemistry and cell biology, genetics and molecular biology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, biochemical skills, and foundational chemistry. These modules develop essential theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory competencies necessary for the study of pharmacology. Year 2 focuses on applying this knowledge to the core principles of pharmacology, physiology, and systems pharmacology, while also introducing bioscience research methods. This combination enables students to understand drug actions, therapeutic mechanisms, and experimental design, preparing them for advanced study and professional practice. In the final year, students deepen their expertise through modules in neuropharmacology and molecular pharmacology, examining how drugs affect the nervous system and cellular processes. The program culminates in a pharmacology dissertation, where students undertake an independent research project that integrates their practical and theoretical learning. Across the three years, this degree equips students with the knowledge, laboratory skills, and research experience required for careers in the pharmaceutical industry, biomedical research, and provides a strong foundation for graduate entry into medicine or related health sciences.
