COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Biomedical Science degree is structured across three years to provide students with both a solid scientific foundation and specialist knowledge required for careers in healthcare, research, and related fields. In Year 1, students study core areas including biochemistry and cell biology, microbiology, genetics, immunology, anatomy and physiology, alongside biomedical laboratory practice, ensuring they gain essential theoretical understanding and hands-on laboratory skills. Year 2 builds on this foundation with more advanced modules such as genes and genomics, bioscience research methods, biochemistry processes, infection and immunity, cellular pathology, and clinical immunology and haematology. These modules deepen students’ understanding of disease mechanisms, diagnostic methods, and clinical laboratory techniques, while also developing research and analytical skills. In Year 3, the focus shifts to specialist areas with modules in integrated medical genetics, clinical biochemistry, medical microbiology, and haematology and transfusion science, providing an in-depth understanding of clinical laboratory disciplines central to modern healthcare. A significant part of the final year is dedicated to a biomedical science research project, allowing students to apply their knowledge through independent investigation and research. This structured progression ensures graduates are well-prepared for professional roles in healthcare laboratories, biomedical research, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, or further clinical training.
