COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Biological Sciences degree is structured to provide a strong foundation in the life sciences while allowing students to specialise in later years according to their interests and career goals. In Stage 1, all modules are compulsory, offering a broad introduction to core subjects including biochemistry and cell biology, ecology, genetics and molecular biology, microbiology, diversity of life, and essential laboratory and field skills. This ensures students gain a solid grounding in both theoretical knowledge and practical techniques. In Year 2, students build on this foundation with compulsory modules in molecular biology techniques, data technologies, and a fieldwork module, while also selecting three designated modules from options such as biogeography, ecosystems, adaptations, genes and genomics, and infectious disease. An optional placement year, Life Sciences at Work, provides further opportunities for professional development and real-world experience. In Year 3, students undertake a substantial research project and dissertation alongside a core module in contemporary issues in biology. They also select three designated modules from a wide range of specialist topics including biodiversity and conservation, applied and environmental microbiology, gene regulation, health and the environment, global sustainability, and earth monitoring. This flexible structure equips graduates with broad scientific knowledge, practical research skills, and specialist expertise to pursue diverse careers or further study in the biological sciences.
