COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mechanical Engineering degree at the University of Northampton is structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of engineering principles, practical skills, and industry knowledge across three years of study. In the first year, students complete six core modules, including Introduction to Engineering Design, Materials Science, Engineering Industry Practice, Thermo-Fluid and Mechanical Principles, Electrical and Electronic Principles, and Mathematics for Engineers. These modules establish a solid foundation in engineering theory, materials, mechanics, electronics, and mathematical techniques, preparing students for more advanced study. The second year builds on this foundation with six modules covering Engineering Design, Advanced Mathematics for Engineers, Industrial Appreciation, Control Systems, Solid Mechanics, and Advanced Thermo-Fluid Principles. These modules develop analytical, problem-solving, and design skills, while introducing students to practical industry applications and more complex engineering systems. In the final year, students focus on advanced technical and applied engineering topics, including Lean Manufacturing and Quality Applications, Machines and Mechanisms, Computational Fluid Mechanics, and Heat Transfer. The program culminates in a substantial Engineering Project, where students integrate their knowledge and skills to design, analyse, and implement solutions to real-world engineering challenges. Throughout the degree, students gain a balance of theoretical understanding, practical expertise, and project management experience, equipping them for careers in mechanical engineering, manufacturing, design, and related technical industries, or for further postgraduate study and professional registration.
