COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Sociology degree at the University of Northampton is structured over three years to provide a progressive and comprehensive understanding of sociological theory, research, and contemporary social issues. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in core sociological concepts and issues, even if they have no prior experience in the subject. Compulsory modules such as the sociology of education, media, crime and society, spaces and places of social inequalities, the sociological imagination, the sociology of love and intimacy, and identity and social change introduce key theories and develop critical thinking skills, preparing students for more advanced study. In the second year, the focus shifts to the theory and practice of social research methods, enabling students to develop practical skills in data collection, analysis, and reflection. Modules on methodology and application in social research and sociological research and reflection in action allow students to apply sociological knowledge to real-world settings and topics of personal and societal interest. In the final year, students engage with more complex sociological theories and concepts while focusing on individualized research interests. The year culminates in a dissertation, supported by expert supervisors, allowing students to investigate a sociological topic of their choice in depth. Throughout the program, students develop analytical, research, and critical thinking skills essential for careers in the public, private, or third sectors, as well as for postgraduate study in sociology.
