COURSE CURRICULUM

The Popular Music BA (Hons) course at the University of Northampton is structured over three years, providing a progressive and comprehensive learning experience for students. In the first year, students focus on foundational skills with modules covering computer music techniques, recording studio practice, composition and theory, creating popular music, performance and practical musicianship, and professional music studies. These modules build essential technical, creative, and professional skills, forming a strong base for further study. The second year expands on these foundations with specialized modules such as sound for screen, understanding how music works, the creative practitioner, creativity and technology, developing popular music, and industry briefs for performers. This stage emphasizes creative application, technological integration, and industry awareness, preparing students to navigate the professional music environment. In the final year, students have the opportunity to undertake optional major projects such as a professional project or a popular music dissertation, alongside compulsory modules including music and sound design for media, the professional music educator, the professional performer, and the creative musician. The third-year curriculum focuses on refining professional skills, exploring advanced creative practices, and preparing students for careers in performance, education, media, and other areas of the music industry. The course offers a balanced combination of practical, theoretical, and professional development throughout its three-year structure.
