COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Multimedia Sports Journalism degree at the University of Northampton is structured to develop both practical and theoretical expertise in sports media across three years of study. In the first year, students build foundational skills in sports writing, news gathering, and production, while exploring the international sports industry, legal and ethical aspects of journalism, and specialist sports topics. These modules establish essential knowledge and prepare students for real-world reporting and media environments. In the second year, the focus shifts to advanced journalistic techniques, with modules emphasizing academic and long-form writing, sports broadcast skills, live sports reporting, and digital and design skills for multimedia sports journalism. Students also participate in sports news days, providing hands-on experience in producing content under professional conditions. The final year centers on professional application and career preparation, with compulsory modules including a practical journalism project, launchpad for careers in sports journalism, international sport and the media, multiplatform journalism, and future trends in journalism. Students complete a dissertation exploring a key issue in sports media, journalism, or ethics, demonstrating critical thinking and research skills. Throughout the course, students develop technical proficiency, analytical understanding, and professional readiness, equipping them to enter the dynamic and competitive field of sports journalism with confidence and competence.
