COURSE CURRICULUM

The Multimedia Journalism BA (Hons) degree at the University of Northampton is structured to progressively develop students’ journalistic skills and understanding across three years. In the first year, students focus on the fundamentals of journalism, including storytelling for news, reporting, newsgathering, and news production skills. Core modules such as law and public affairs for journalists and Journalism Now ensure students gain a solid grounding in media law, ethical considerations, and the contemporary journalism landscape. Year one establishes the foundation for both practical competence and critical understanding. In the second year, students advance their technical and digital capabilities with modules in design skills, digital skills, and broadcast skills. Students also engage in deeper analysis through academic and long-form journalism projects and further study of law and regulation for journalists, building expertise in both content creation and professional standards. The final year emphasizes professional readiness and applied practice, with compulsory modules including multiplatform journalism, future trends in journalism, and the Journalism Practical Project. Students undertake a journalism dissertation to demonstrate research and analytical skills, while the Launchpad module prepares them for career development. Across all three years, the program integrates practical, ethical, and theoretical learning, equipping graduates with the knowledge, experience, and professional confidence required to succeed in a dynamic, evolving media industry.
