COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Law with Criminology degree at the University of Northampton is structured over three years to provide a balanced and integrated study of law and criminology. In the first year, students take six compulsory modules, four from law, including Learning the Law, Criminal Law, Ethics, Discrimination and Human Rights, and Current Legal Issues and Jurisprudence, and two from criminology, Crime and Society and The Science of Crime and Criminals. This combination introduces students to both disciplines and encourages them to explore where they intersect and diverge. The second year introduces greater flexibility, with three compulsory modules—Criminal Litigation and Organised Transnational Crime from law, and Crime and Justice from criminology—alongside three optional modules chosen from law, criminology, or history, allowing students to tailor their studies to areas of interest such as Child and Family Law, Human Rights, Green Crime, International Policing, or historical perspectives on crime. In the final year, students focus on advanced study with two compulsory modules, including Crime and Punishment from criminology and the Practice Improvement Plan from law, where they design an intervention to improve practice. Additionally, students select three optional modules from law, criminology, history, or criminal justice, such as Sentencing and Penal Policy, Global Counterterrorism, Mental Health Law, Critiquing Criminalistics, Global International Perspectives, Jack the Ripper’s East End, or Cyber Crime, enabling them to specialise and integrate knowledge for professional and academic development.
