COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Interior Architecture & Spatial Design degree at the University of Northampton is structured over three years to progressively develop students’ design, technical, and professional skills. In the first year, students focus on foundational learning through core modules including Design Project 1, 3D Computer Aided Design 1, Design, Construction and Detailing 1, and Design Theory Context and Practice 1. These modules introduce students to key principles of spatial design, technical drawing, construction methods, and theoretical frameworks, while encouraging creative exploration and problem-solving. In the second year, students build on this foundation with Design Project 2, 3D Computer Aided Design 2, Design, Construction and Detailing 2, and Design Theory Context and Practice 2. This stage emphasizes more complex design challenges, advanced technical skills, and critical engagement with theory and practice, allowing students to develop comprehensive design solutions with attention to detail, functionality, and sustainability. The final year centers on independent and professional-level work through the Minor Design Project, the Final Major Project, and the Dissertation. Students consolidate their learning by producing substantial design proposals, engaging in research, and demonstrating their ability to integrate creativity, technical knowledge, and critical thinking. Across all three years, the program equips graduates with the skills, experience, and confidence needed for careers in interior architecture, spatial design, and related creative industries.
