COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Illustration degree at the University of Northampton is structured over three years to provide students with a comprehensive and progressive development of creative, technical, and professional skills. In the first year, students establish foundational knowledge through modules such as Exploring Creative Practices, Roles and Contexts, Creative Projects, and Critical and Cultural Perspectives. These modules encourage experimentation, critical thinking, and an understanding of the broader social and cultural context of illustration. In the second year, the focus shifts to refining practical skills and collaborative work, with modules including Becoming Illustrators, Creative Collaborations, Visual and Material Culture, and Illustration Practice. Students gain hands-on experience with both traditional and digital techniques, while developing their creative identity and learning to work effectively in team-based projects. In the final year, emphasis is placed on professional readiness and industry engagement through the Professional Portfolio, Careers for Illustrators, and Illustration Insights modules. Students consolidate their learning by producing a comprehensive portfolio, exploring career opportunities, and gaining insight into professional practices in the creative industries. Across all three years, the program fosters creative exploration, critical analysis, and practical expertise, equipping graduates with the technical skills, professional awareness, and creative confidence necessary to pursue successful careers as illustrators or in related visual communication roles.
