COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Criminology degree provides a structured pathway to develop a deep understanding of crime, justice, and the social factors that shape criminal behavior. In the first year, students are introduced to the foundations of criminology through modules such as Crime and Society, Research Methods for Criminologists, The Science of Crime and Criminals, and Imagining Crime. They also explore delinquency and the development of criminal careers while beginning to establish their identity as criminologists. In the second year, the focus shifts to more advanced areas, with compulsory modules in Crime and Justice, Advanced Criminological Theory, Ethics and Professional Practice, and Advanced Methodologies, equipping students with the theoretical and research skills needed to analyze complex issues. They also have the option to study specialist areas such as international policing, deviance, criminologists in society, and criminality across the life course. The final year encourages students to apply their learning critically and independently. They complete a dissertation alongside compulsory study of Crime and Punishment, while optional modules allow them to tailor their interests, covering topics such as violence, global perspectives of crime, criminalistics, activism, and social injustices. This progression equips students with both academic expertise and professional skills for careers in criminology and related fields.
