ABOUT UNIVERSITY
The University of Northampton, located in Northamptonshire, England, has a rich history that dates back to medieval times. The original University of Northampton was established in 1261, becoming the third university in England after Oxford and Cambridge. However, it was short-lived, as King Henry III dissolved it in 1265 due to concerns that it posed a threat to Oxford. A royal decree was issued banning the establishment of any future university in Northampton. In the 20th century, educational institutions in Northampton evolved significantly. Northampton Technical College was opened in 1924 at St George's Avenue, which later became the Avenue Campus. The college expanded with a School of Art opening in 1937. By the 1970s, Northamptonshire was one of the few counties in England without a teacher-training college. To address this, the College of Education was established in 1972, later merging with the Colleges of Technology and Art in 1975 to form Nene College of Higher Education, named after the nearby River Nene. Over the years, the college integrated several specialized institutions, including Leathersellers College, St. Andrew's School of Occupational Therapy, and Sir Gordon Roberts College of Nursing and Midwifery.Nene College gained undergraduate degree awarding powers in 1993 and transitioned to University College Northampton in 1999. Full university status was granted in 2005 after successfully repealing the centuries-old royal decree banning universities in Northampton. That same year, the university gained the authority to validate its own research degrees, having previously relied on the University of Leicester for validation. The first doctoral degrees awarded by the university were conferred in 2006.In 2010, the university's School of Applied Sciences was renamed the School of Science and Technology and relocated to the newly refurbished Newton Building at Avenue Campus. This building was officially opened by Princess Anne, marking a significant milestone in the university's development. Today, the University of Northampton continues to grow, combining its historic legacy with modern advancements in education.
