COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Social Policy course consists of a range of compulsory and optional modules that provide a comprehensive understanding of how social policies are developed, implemented, and evaluated. The core modules include Understanding Poverty and Social Inequality: Perspectives from History, which examines the historical roots and evolving nature of inequality, and Comparative Social Policy and Social Change, which explores how different countries address social challenges in varying political and cultural contexts. Social Theory and Social Policy: Rethinking Welfare introduces key theoretical frameworks that underpin modern welfare systems, encouraging students to critically assess policy approaches. The Making of Social Policy focuses on how policies are designed, negotiated, and delivered, highlighting the role of government, institutions, and advocacy in shaping social outcomes. Themes and Perspectives in Social Research develops essential research skills, preparing students to analyze data and conduct evidence-based policy evaluation. The Dissertation allows for independent research on a topic of personal or professional interest within the field. Optional modules such as Social Policy in Practice, Housing and Social Justice, and Reflecting on Politics, Policy and Practice offer opportunities to specialize in areas of contemporary relevance. Together, these modules equip students with analytical, research, and policy-making skills for careers in social research, governance, and advocacy.
