COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Criminology course provides a thorough understanding of crime, criminal justice, and the social structures that shape responses to criminal behaviour, both locally and globally. Compulsory modules, including Theory and Methods in Criminology, Comparative Criminology and Criminal Justice, Power, Violence and Oppression, and the Dissertation, equip students with the theoretical knowledge, research skills, and critical insight necessary to analyse complex criminological issues. Theory and Methods in Criminology introduces foundational perspectives and research techniques, enabling students to critically evaluate evidence and develop robust analytical skills. Comparative Criminology and Criminal Justice examines international approaches to crime and justice, highlighting differences in legal systems, policing strategies, and policy responses. Power, Violence and Oppression explores the societal and structural factors that contribute to crime and inequality, encouraging students to consider ethical and social dimensions in their analyses. The Dissertation allows students to conduct independent research, applying theoretical and methodological knowledge to a topic of contemporary relevance. Optional modules, such as International Drug Policy, The Politics of Prison and Punishment, Understanding Safeguarding and Vulnerabilities, Understanding Domestic and Sexual Abuse, and Religion and Radicalisation, provide opportunities to specialise in specific areas, broadening expertise and professional insight. Graduates leave the program with strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills, prepared for careers in criminal justice, policy development, research, or further academic study.
