The MA Children’s Book Illustration course offers a comprehensive program that combines creative practice, technical development, and research-led study to prepare students for professional work in the children’s publishing industry. Compulsory modules, including Research Methodologies, Research in Context, Reflective Practice, Experimental Practice, Specialist Practice, and Children’s Book Illustration Advanced Practice, provide a structured framework for developing both artistic and professional skills. Research Methodologies and Research in Context equip students with the tools to investigate illustration practices, critically analyze industry trends, and contextualize their work within the history and culture of children’s literature. Reflective Practice encourages self-evaluation and critical thinking, helping students refine their creative approach and articulate their artistic intentions. Experimental Practice fosters innovation through the exploration of different media, techniques, and narrative methods, allowing students to push the boundaries of conventional illustration. Specialist Practice focuses on developing expertise in a chosen area of children’s illustration, while the Advanced Practice module provides the opportunity to consolidate learning, produce a professional portfolio, and create cohesive, high-quality work suitable for publication.
