COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Psychology with Counselling degree is structured over three years to provide students with a thorough understanding of psychological theory, research, and counselling practice, preparing them for careers that support mental health and wellbeing. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge through modules such as Cognitive and Biological Psychology with Analytical Skills, Foundations of Therapeutic Practice: Communication, Personal Development, and Relational Skills, Developmental and Social Psychology with Analytical Skills, and Psychology: Past, Present and Future. These modules introduce key psychological concepts, communication techniques, and relational skills necessary for effective counselling. The second year builds on this foundation with Advanced Cognitive and Biological Psychology with Quantitative Methods, Advanced Social and Developmental Psychology with Qualitative Methods, and Principles of Counselling Psychology, alongside optional modules such as Clinical and Mental Health Psychology or Psychology of Child Development, allowing students to tailor their learning to specific interests. In the final year, students consolidate their practical and theoretical skills through Developing Counselling Skills within an Applied Context, Psychology in Action: Research, Practice and Individual Differences, Kickstart Your Career: Work Placement and Preparing for Graduate Employment, and an Applied Psychology Project. These modules provide hands-on experience, research opportunities, and professional development, equipping graduates with the skills and knowledge to provide effective support, conduct evidence-based interventions, and pursue careers in counselling, mental health, or further postgraduate study.
