COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Physics with Astrophysics degree combines a deep understanding of fundamental physics with a focus on the study of the universe. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in physics and mathematics through modules such as Fundamentals of Physics, Applied and Computational Physics, Functions, Vectors and Calculus, and Astrophysics I. These modules develop analytical, computational, and problem-solving skills that underpin all scientific study. The second year expands knowledge with Astrophysics II, Principles of Physics, Properties of Matter, Ordinary Differential Equations, and practical laboratory work, allowing students to link theoretical concepts with hands-on experimentation and refine their understanding of complex physical systems. In the third year, the curriculum advances to specialized topics including the Formation, Structure and Evolution of Stars, Cosmology and Galaxies, Condensed Matter and Surface Physics, and a comprehensive Physics/Astronomy Project. Students also undertake the Third Year Laboratory and a UAS Teaching Placement, providing practical experience and professional development. Optional modules such as Nuclear and Particle Physics, Advanced Quantum Mechanics, Electrodynamics, and Plasma and Solar Physics allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests. Overall, the degree equips graduates with strong theoretical knowledge, practical laboratory skills, research experience, and professional preparedness, supporting careers in physics, astrophysics, space science, research, or further postgraduate study.
