COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Neuroscience degree provides a detailed exploration of the brain and nervous system, examining how neural processes influence behaviour, perception, mood, and memory. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge in cognitive and biological psychology, learning analytical skills alongside an understanding of neuroscience from cellular to systemic levels. Modules such as “From the Cell to the Neuron” and “From the Neuron to the Brain” ensure students grasp the structure and function of neural networks while contextualising the history and developments of neuroscience. In the second year, the focus shifts to advanced topics including neuropharmacology, molecular and cellular neuroscience, and principles of neuropsychology, complemented by quantitative methods for research and data analysis. These modules provide both theoretical understanding and practical laboratory experience, allowing students to investigate the molecular, cellular, and cognitive mechanisms underlying brain function. The final year emphasises applied learning and professional preparation, including a work placement and independent research project. Students study advanced neural signalling, neurotransmitter activity, and the effects of drugs on the nervous system, consolidating both scientific knowledge and research skills. Graduates leave equipped with practical, analytical, and investigative expertise, preparing them for careers in biomedical research, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, or further study in neuroscience and related disciplines.
