COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Fire and Leadership Studies course provides a comprehensive understanding of fire science, leadership, and risk management, preparing students for professional roles in fire and rescue services. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge in combustion and fire behavior, safety and fire law, building materials, and community fire safety, while also acquiring essential skills in science, engineering, leadership, and motivation. Optional modules such as operational firefighting and fire risk management allow students to tailor their learning to specific interests. The second year builds on this foundation with a focus on fire safety management and legislation, accident and catastrophe analysis, occupational safety, health and environment, and project management, alongside community fire safety strategies. Optional modules in leading and developing people and fire risk assessment in residential and non-residential buildings deepen practical expertise. In the final year, the course emphasizes strategic leadership and decision-making through modules on leading and learning through change, fire investigation, hazards and risk management, and a fire studies dissertation, enabling students to undertake independent research. The program combines theoretical knowledge, practical application, and leadership development, equipping graduates with the skills and confidence to respond effectively to complex fire and rescue challenges, implement safety strategies, and lead teams in high-pressure environments, ensuring operational excellence and community protection.
