COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Dental Therapy program provides students with the knowledge, practical skills, and professional competence needed to deliver high-quality dental care as part of a dental team. In Year 1, the Health Prevention and Early Disease module introduces students to routine primary care, preventive methods, and basic restorative techniques in a simulated environment. Students learn the science of dental caries, cavity preparation, properties of dental materials, and foundational oral and systemic health concepts, while developing professionalism through reflective practice. Year 2 focuses on Dental Prevention and Disease Management in Dental Therapy, where students gain the skills and knowledge to competently prevent, identify, and manage oral diseases within a clinical setting. Emphasis is placed on effective communication, teamwork, professionalism, and evidence-based decision-making, enabling students to make informed clinical judgments. In Year 3, Dentistry in the Community and Complex Patients builds on prior learning to enhance clinical confidence and independence. Students learn to manage patients with diverse needs, including those with anxiety or requiring sedation, while strengthening skills in assessment, prevention, risk management, and patient-centred care. The program also emphasizes research skills, professional responsibility, and understanding social and health inequalities. Graduates are fully prepared to register as dental therapists, equipped with clinical expertise, ethical awareness, and professional insight to deliver safe, effective, and compassionate oral healthcare in a variety of practice settings.
