COURSE CURRICULUM

The BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering degree offers a comprehensive pathway for students to develop expertise in designing, analysing, and improving mechanical systems. In the first year, students focus on core engineering principles through modules such as Design and Sustainability, Engineering Analysis, Engineering Practice, Fundamentals of Engineering Science, Mechanical Engineering Applications, and Mechanical Engineering Science. These foundational modules provide essential knowledge in mechanics, materials, and basic engineering problem-solving, while introducing practical and analytical skills that underpin future study. The second year builds on this foundation with more specialised modules, including Applied Instrumentation and Control, Design and Manufacture, Thermo-fluids, Operations Management, Mechanics, Kinematics and Materials, and Further Engineering Mathematics applied in CAD and Simulation. These modules allow students to apply theoretical concepts to practical engineering scenarios, gaining experience with design, control systems, manufacturing processes, and computational techniques. In the third year, students engage in advanced projects and professional practice through Engineering Project with Sustainability, Engineering Design and Innovation, and Mechanical Engineering Systems, consolidating their learning and demonstrating their capability to tackle complex engineering challenges. Optional modules such as Computational Fluid Dynamics, Engineering Simulation, Mechanical Systems Reliability, and Computer Aided Tribology provide opportunities to specialise further. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in diverse industries, including automotive, aerospace, energy, and manufacturing, with strong skills in innovation, problem-solving, and sustainable engineering practices.
