COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Youth Work and Community Practice course offers a professional pathway for students to develop the skills, knowledge, and experience necessary to work effectively with young people and communities. In the first year, students build a foundation through modules such as Assessed Professional Practice in Youth Work 1, Policy, Practice and Legislation, Safeguarding and Child Protection, Communication in Practice, Youth Dialogue, and Exploring Modern Youth Work, introducing core principles of youth work, ethical practice, and effective communication. The second year focuses on developing practical and theoretical expertise with modules including Assessed Professional Practice in Youth Work 2, Contemporary Issues for Young People, Theory and Practice of Youth Work, and Psychology of Youth and Community, allowing students to engage with real-world issues, apply intervention strategies, and gain hands-on experience. Optional modules such as Youth Development or Researching with Children and Young People enable further specialisation and research skills. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through Assessed Professional Practice in Youth Work 3, Dissertation, Management in Youth Work and Community Practice, and Equality, Diversity and Anti-Oppressive Practice, preparing them for professional roles with advanced knowledge of management, ethical practice, and inclusive approaches. Overall, the course equips graduates to pursue careers in youth work, community development, social care, and related sectors, providing the practical experience, reflective skills, and professional competence needed to support and empower young people and communities.
