COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) TESOL and a Modern Language course offers a combination of language expertise and practical teaching skills, preparing students to teach English to speakers of other languages while developing proficiency in a chosen modern language such as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, or British Sign Language. In the first year, students study modules including Languages in Context, TESOL Compulsory 1A and 1B: Theories and Practice in TESOL, alongside foundational language modules, introducing key principles of language acquisition, teaching methodology, and cultural awareness. The second year emphasizes practical application through TESOL Compulsory 2A: Teaching Practice and TESOL Compulsory 2B: Theories in TESOL, allowing students to gain hands-on teaching experience while continuing to develop their language skills. Optional modules such as Research Methods or Employability and Global Citizenship provide opportunities to enhance academic research abilities or professional development. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through Advanced TESOL, TESOL Compulsory 3: Theories and Practice in TESOL, and a Dissertation, allowing them to conduct independent research, reflect critically on teaching practices, and refine their instructional expertise. Throughout the course, students combine theoretical knowledge with practical experience, gaining the skills, cultural understanding, and professional qualifications necessary to pursue careers in language education, international teaching, or further study in TESOL, applied linguistics, and global education.
