COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Korean Studies degree offers a comprehensive exploration of the Korean language alongside the broader cultural, historical, and political context of the Asia Pacific region. In the first year, students establish foundational language skills through modules such as Beginners Korean, while engaging with the shaping of the Asia Pacific, East Asian popular culture, and the historical background to Korea. Optional modules in humanities or social sciences provide additional perspectives on regional issues. The second year builds on this foundation, focusing on Korean language and society through sequential modules and exploring cultural transformations and cross-cultural encounters in the Asia Pacific. Students also examine regional dynamics, such as Taiwan’s role in the Asia Pacific, and have opportunities to develop employability and research skills through optional modules. In the final year, students consolidate their expertise with advanced study in international relations and sustainable development in the Asia Pacific, supported by a dissertation and a translation project that demonstrate both linguistic proficiency and analytical skills. Optional modules in advanced Korean language studies and Korean culture allow students to tailor their learning to specific interests. The degree equips graduates with the language skills, cultural awareness, and critical understanding necessary for careers in international business, diplomacy, translation, research, and education.
